One of the Greatest - Insane Drum Solo • Buddy Rich

Buddy Rich He lived up to the billing of "the world's greatest drummer." He was completely self taught, and started playing drums in vaudeville as "Traps, the Drum Wonder" when he was only 18 months old. He performed in vaudeville throughout his childhood, developing into a decent singer and tap dancer. He performed with Artie Shaw in 1939 when the clarinetist had the most popular band in swing, and then with Tommy Dorsey through the war years. During this era it became obvious that he was the king of drummers, easily dethroning his friend Gene Krupa.

When studio chiefs heard about the making of “Gentleman’s Agreement,” they asked the producer not to make it, fearing its theme of anti-Semitism and racism would stir up a hornet's nest. Not only did production continue, but a scene was subsequently written into the script that mirrored that confrontation. The movie, directed by Elia Kazan, and starred Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Sam Jaffe, became Fox’s top-grossing picture of the year in 1948 and won three Academy Awards for Best Motion Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress: Celeste Holm.
